Our Group started when E-smart Distribution Pte Ltd ESD, then known as Technology Distribution Pte Ltd was incorporated in August 1989 and commenced business in 1990 as a distributor of electronic active and passive components to electronics manufacturers in Singapore.

Our business grew steadily and in 1993, we set up our first overseas office in Penang, Malaysia,in 1994.

In 1995, Acma Ltd, a company listed in Singapore, acquired a 60% stake in ESD. Towards the end of 1999, Mr Denis Low Siew Kheng, our Chairman, bought out Acma 's 60% stake and acquired control of ESD. Led by our current management team, our Group expanded further into the Asia region.

In 1999, we set up E-smart Electronics Limited ESHK in Hong Kong as we expand our coverage to Hong Kong and China. Recognizing that a pure distribution business for a niche market was not sustainable, we ventured into the design and supply business with a view to enhancing our business. We provided design services to our existing customers to enhance their products by designing-in more highly integrated components distributed by our Group.

In 2000, we developed our design and supply business further by moving into the design and supply of intermediate products. In anticipation of the growth of the DVD industry, we focused on products such as in-box television control subsystems and DVD player subsystems. We then identified manufacturers and suppliers of key and complementary active devices and chipsets (with whom we could work closely) for such intermediate products.

In the same year, we set up our first overseas programming facility in Penang, providing firmware programming services of active devices for ICs and chip set manufacturers.

In 2000, identifying the potential growth of the digital video market, we decided to focus on designing and developing subsystems for video streaming, video surveillance and video-on-demand end-products and established E2Vision Technology Pte Ltd. In 2001, E2Vision was recognize "preferred hardware design partner" of Equator Technologies Inc. E2Vision develops reference designs and base designs based on chips for subsystems designed by Equator that can be incorporated into video-related end products.ed a In August 2001, with a view to expanding into India, we established E-smart Technology Pte Ltd and subsequently opened offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Our overseas expansion continued in 2002 with opening of office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Bangkok, Thailand. In addition, we also set up our second programming service facility in Singapore. Our third programming service facility was set up in Shanghai in 2003.

In 2003, with a view to rationalize our Group, we re-structure all our subsidiaries under the holding company, Esmart Holdings Limited.
